Jay seemed distracted, and Caroline couldnât figure out why. Maybe the transition into fall made him restless too.
âDid you get Ridge signed up for soccer?â he asked as Caroline sat in bed reading.
Not this again. Caroline glanced up from her book. âRidge doesnât want to play soccer, Jay.â
He pulled his shirt off. âWell, he needs to do something.â
âAnd I canât find his birth certificate,â Caroline added, staring up at him. He was getting soft around the middle, his stomach bulging over his jeans. âSignups are Tuesday, and weâd need it.â
âSo, go to the clerk and get a copy tomorrow.â
Caroline took off her glasses. So much for reading. âHe isnât interested in sports. Heâs interested in birds.â
âAnd youâre fine with him growing up to be antisocial?â
Caroline sat up straighter against the headboard. âAm I antisocial?â
âYeah, a little.â Jay slipped off his jeans and threw them toward the hamper. He missed, but he didnât seem to care. âI mean, youâre depressed because Libbyâs leaving. Iâve told you all along you spend too much time with those birds and not enough time with people. If youâd listened, youâd probably have more friends.â
Caroline slammed her book closed. âWell, thatâs a shitty thing to say. My father died, and now, Iâm losing my best friend. Forgive me if Iâm a little sad.â
Jay slipped into bed. âFine, be sad. But instead of spending hours out with the crows, try actual people. Join a church, volunteer for one of Libbyâs charities, and meet some of her other friends.â
Caroline heard a pounding in her ears. âWhatâs this about? I hardly spend any time at the creek. Youâd realize that if you were ever around.â
She looked Jay in the eyes, daring him to say something else, but he remained silent. He switched the lamp off on his side of the bed and reached toward her. She pulled the covers up to her chest, wishing she hadnât chosen her thin silk nightgown. She had nothing in mind when she put it on and certainly had nothing in mind now.
But Jay didnât try to touch her; he just stretched past and turned off her lamp.
âHey,â she said. âI was reading.â
âGoodnight.â He rolled away from her. âDonât forget to pick up the birth certificate tomorrow.â
